I attended Research Paper Conference for Graduating Students of English Department today. Basically, we have six groups from daytime students and evening students. One group has one presenter and one commentator and they are introduced by the instructor. After the instructor's introduction, the presenter made his or her speech based on the paper for 10-12 minutes and was followed by the commentary for 6-7 minutes. After presentation, the instructor led the discussion for 5 minutes.
I was the last second presentator. Actually, I spent much time preparing and practicing for the presentation because it's so important and I was very honored to present my paper in the conference. Was I nervous? Sure. Because I had to present in front of other students and instructors!!! Luckily, when I presented my paper, I didn't feel nervous at all and I kind of enjoyed speaking in front of them and watching them. Eye-contact is important, right? Especially when I saw some people gave me positive response by nodding their heads or smiling to me. Gee, I love that feeling.
After my presentation, Diby started to comment on my presentation and paper. She did an excellent job. Of course, we discussed that earlier. She is great at that. But she gave me a big challenge because Peter suggested that she could raise a question to challenge my conclusion, which would give me good practice to answer questions in public. Diby and I thought of one question just one day before the conference. She asked me how I looked at a famous writer in UK, Alan Bennet's campaign to encourage people to boycott Waterstone and Amazon.com. That's a nice question, isn't it? I think Diby and I worked well this time. And I am glad to have her being my commentator.
Everything was going well, but I missed one question one instructor asked. But Diby helped me answer that question. (It's really hard to answer questions in public, especially those questions are raised by teachers. They asked questions right to the point and the questions were not easy to answer. Some even had doubt about your paper. So presenters have to know their paper well so that they can answer correctly. And presenters have to response immediately without having time to think about it. Well, beside the question I misunderstood, others are fine.
The greatest thing is that other instructors came over to us and told Peter that we did a good job. It's so honorable because they only said this to us. One instructor even asked me where I learn English. I said, "In Taiwan." And he was surprised. He gave me very great compliments. I really appreciated it because I always think that my English is not very good. I think I still have a lot to learn. But what those instructor said really touched our heart. Diby and Peter helped a lot so that I could present my paper well. And I think Diby will also do well if she has a chance to present her paper.
Anyway, today is so terrific. Both Diby and I are satisfied with our performance and we really learned a lot. We learned how to ask questions and how people present their paper. I also learned how to answer in public. And we both think that we are very lucky to have Peter teach us research writing. After this experience, I have nothing to fear.
One thing is very interesting. Mr. Christopher Peck introduced Robert by saying that the student knows more American idioms than he. Yes, Robert really know a lot. That's his habit to learn many idioms.
